Specialty Contact Lenses

If you have been told that contact lenses are not an option, speak with your optometrist trained in fitting specialty contact lenses. Every optometrist can fit conventional contact lenses. However, specialty contacts are another story, and few optometrists have undergone the necessary training in fitting specialty lenses, such as scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, or custom rigid gas permeable lenses.

  • Scleral contact lenses are for patients with keratoconus, dry eye, and other eye conditions that make contact lens wear challenging. Scleral contact lenses vault over the cornea to create clear and comfortable vision.
  • OrthoK contact lenses are a special type of rigid lens worn overnight as a means of vision correction and myopia control (please make “myopia control” another link – so it opens another page to myopia control – see myopia control emailed document). As the wearer sleeps, the contact lens gently reshapes the cornea allowing for temporary correction of their refractive error. This overnight correction allows you to go about your day without the need for glasses or other corrective lenses.
  • These rigid lenses aren’t as popular or well-known as soft lenses, but they offer the advantages of durability, crisp vision and high oxygen permeability.
  • Challenges such as astigmatism, presbyopia, keratoconus and dry eyes needn’t be a barrier to contact lens wear, but they do require more time and patience.
